How to Install OpenShot 2.5.1 in Ubuntu 20.04 and Linux Mint 20

Finding the right software application for video editing can be a struggle. Paid professional editing software, such as Adobe Premiere and Pinnacle Studio, come with all the latest features. However, if you are a newbie in video editing and just want to edit some videos for social media, then free software should suffice. There are several open-source and feature-rich video editing programs available for free, and OpenShot is one of them.

OpenShot does not require much hardware resources to work on photos and videos. By using the OpenShot video editing software, you can easily extract audio from videos, cut and join videos, and add various useful effects to videos. Initially, the OpenShot project was started as a hobby. After some time, the software began getting more attention. Now, OpenShot is a full-fledged video editing software.

This article shows you how to install the OpenShot Video Editor version 2.5.1 in Ubuntu 20.04 and Linux Mint 20. At the time this article was written, the latest version of OpenShot is version 2.5.1.

Installing OpenShot in Ubuntu 20.04 and Linux Mint 20

The latest OpenShot video editor can be installed in Ubuntu 20.04 and Linux Mint 20 using either of the following two methods:

  1. From the official repository
  2. From the Personal Package Archive (PPA) repository

In the following sections, we will discuss both methods for installing the OpenShot video editor.

Method #1: Install OpenShot from Official Repository

The OpenShot software is included in the official repositories of Ubuntu 20.04 and Linux Mint 20, As such, OpenShot can easily be installed by executing a single command. Since Linux Mint 20 is based on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, the installation procedure is the same for both distributions. Perform the following steps to install OpenShot in Ubuntu 20.04 and Linux Mint 20 from official repositories:

Step 1: Update System Apt-Cache

It is recommended to update your system's apt-cache before installing any new software application. Execute the following command to update the system's apt-cache:

$ sudo apt update

Step 2: Install OpenShot

Run the following command to install OpenShot:

$ sudo apt install openshot

During the installation, the command-line will display a y/n option to continue or terminate the installation process. Enter y in the terminal to continue the installation.

Once OpenShot is successfully installed, open the Applications menu and type 'OpenShot' in the search bar.

Click the OpenShot application icon to open it.

The OpenShot dashboard will appear. At the dashboard screen, click the Help option at the top-left corner, then click About OpenShot.

This window will display the installed version of OpenShot.

As you can see in the above image, OpenShot version 2.4.3 is installed on my Ubuntu 20.04 system.

This is an older version of the program than the latest version because the official repositories often do not maintain the latest version.

Method #2: Install OpenShot from PPA Repository

A Personal Package Archive or PPA repository is an external repository that maintains the latest version of a software application. In the previous installation method, we observed that the latest version (2.5.1) of OpenShot was not installed from the base repository; instead, version 2.4.3 was installed. The latest version of OpenShot can be installed through the PPA repository.

Perform the following steps to install the latest version of OpenShot in Ubuntu 20.04 and Linux Mint 20.

Step 1: Add OpenShot PPA Repository

Before installing OpenShot, add its PPA repository using the following command:

$ sudo apt-add-repository ppa:openshot.developers/ppa

Step 2: Update System Apt-Cache

Once the PPA repository has been added, update the apt-cache using the following command:

$ sudo apt update

Step 3: Install OpenShot from PPA Repository

Next, install OpenShot from the PPA repository using the following command:

$ sudo apt install openshot

Launch OpenShot Application

Once the OpenShot application has been installed, open it from the Application Menu, as discussed in Method #1.

Check the installed version, and you will see that the latest version (2.5.1) has been installed successfully from the PPA repository.

From the dashboard screen, start using and exploring the OpenShot software application to edit your videos.
