Black border or bar on Monitor in Windows 10 or Surface device

If you have started seeing a black border around your computer display then maybe you are wondering why this has happened and what you can do to fix this problem. The black bar could also appear on just the sides or bottom. This post will show you how to get rid of this black border or bar around the screen or monitor in Windows 10 PC or Surface Pro device.

Black border on Monitor in Windows 10

If you face this issue, there are three things you could try to fix this issue:

  1. Check Screen Resolution
  2. Update Graphics Drivers
  3. Reset the device

1] Check Screen Resolution

You have to adjust your monitor for better screen resolution. Open your Windows 10 Settings > Display. Under Scale and layout, go for the 100% (Recommended) option for the size of text, apps, and other items. Under Resolution, select the Recommended setting.

The Surface Pro can go up to a maximum resolution of 2160 x 1440, so right now the user must check if the device is set to the max here.

Now check to see if the black bars are still there. They should be gone at this point, but if for some strange reason nothing has changed, then attempt the steps below.

2] Update Graphics & Monitor Drivers

If you have not updated your drivers recently, then perhaps you could update the Graphics Driver and see if that helps you. If you recently updated your Graphics Drivers and then started facing this issue, maybe you need to Rollback the driver software.

If it does not help, you could visit the manufacturer's website and download the graphics driver setup for your system. Then via the Device Manager uninstall this driver and then run the downloaded setup file to fresh install it. You will see this driver in Device Manager under Display adapters.

Also, scroll down to Monitors and expand the list. Here you will find your drivers for your monitor/s if you are using a desktop or an external monitor.

You may update them as well and see if it helps.

3] Reset Windows 10 or Surface device

You may use the Reset this PC lets you restore Windows 10 to factory settings without losing files.

Performing a hard reset of your Surface device is an easy task. Simply press and hold the power button on your device for up to 30 seconds, then release. After that, press and hold the volume-up button along with the power button for up to 15 seconds, then release. During the hold down process, the screen may flash and do weird things, but don't worry about, it's normal. After releasing all buttons, wait a while for 10 seconds, then turn on your Surface Pro 3 by pressing the power button once. Finally, check to see if the black bars on either side of the display are gone.

We do believe that the first option is good enough to solve the problem. All the best!
